    O.A.A. Reading and Math Vocabulary Week 1

    Your child will be completing activities at school to reinforce the vocabulary. Please have your child review the words nightly and a vocabulary assessment will be given next Friday. The students will be expected to give the vocabulary word to a given definition. A word bank will be provided.

    Synonyms- words that mean the same

    Antonyms- words with opposite meanings

    Homophones- words that sound alike but are spelled differently and have different meanings.

    Contraction- a shortened form of two words that uses an apostrophe to show that a letter or letters have been left out.

    Genre- a type, or kind , of literature

    Details- important ideas or events from a reading selection

    Characters- the people, animals, or creatures in a story

    Selection- a synonym for passage

    Setting- the time and place a story happens, or takes place

    Character traits- a synonym for characteristics; words that describe a character

    Main idea- the most important idea in a selection

    Minimum- the lowest number in a set of data

    Sum- the answer to an addition problem

    Product- the answer to a multiplication problem

    Estimate- find a number close to the given number

    Difference- the answer to a subtraction problem

    Area- the space that covers the inside of a shape

    Mode- the number that appears most often in a set of data

    Maximum- the highest number in a set of data.

    Perimeter- the length around all sides of a shape
