Why use Yammer?

Yammer allows you to post brief messages to a specific colleague or the entire group.  Use it for work related info.  Use it for fun.  Use it to connect with colleagues in other buildings.  Use it to quickly give colleagues access to a file.

The Wikipedia summary

Yammer is a microblogging service launched in September 2008.[1] Like Twitter, it allows users to post updates of their activities, follow others' updates, tag content, and create memes. Unlike Twitter, Yammer focuses on businesses, and only individuals with the same corporate email address can join a given network.

The gist

Yammer is a social network accessible only to users with a valid Goshen email address.  Yammer allows you to post short messages for your staff members.  You can discuss almost anything, work related or otherwise, as long as it is not inappropriate subject matter.  For details, read the attached...

Yammer terms

A tweet or a yam: the singular noun of a message posted on Yammer or Twitter.  I prefer tweet.

Follow: Yammer allows you to choose those colleagues you wish to follow.  In following a user, you will see everything they tweet, provided that it is not tweeted in a private group of which you are not a member.  All tweets by users you are following appear in the 'My Feed' section of Yammer.

Unfollow: This is a toggle that allows you to decide you no longer want to see everything a colleague tweets.  This can be toggled at any time.  You can still see what anyone in the organization tweets by clicking the ALL section in Yammer.

Reply: If you see a tweet to which you wish to reply, click 'reply' next the message.  When you post your reply, the organization will see that YOU replied to a tweet from THEM, and the colleague you replied to will receive an email reminder.

Groups: Groups allow you to see tweets from a groups of colleagues based on membership.  Groups might be 'Technology' and 'MC' and 'MC dept chairs'.  You can be a member of multiple groups.  Groups are essentially a way of organizing tweets into a given topic, allowing you to filter out the rest of the tweets in the organization.

What can you tweet?

You can copy and paste web addresses from the address bar in safari.  The link will work in Yammer.

You can attach almost any kind of file.  Pictures, spreadsheets, word docs, pdfs.  Anything will attach.  Great way to quickly share files with staff.

Desktop application

You don't have to log into the Yammer website to follow your colleagues' tweets.  There is a Yammer desktop application that will keep you up to date all the time.  To get access to the Yammer desktop app, see your tech chair or post your request on the helpdesk.  Screen shot below...
