    Week of 1/3
    Pre-Algebra: Bells 3,4,5,7

    Dear parents and guardians,

After a refreshing break, we’re back to school and back to work this week in pre-algebra, investigating families of graphs. Students are learning to tell the difference between seven types of graphs and equations: linear, inverse variation, absolute value, quadratic, cubic, exponential growth and exponential decay. The state standard we are working towards is Algebra B3: “Students will identify functions as linear or nonlinear based on information given in a graph or equation.”

On Tuesday, we will use graphing calculators in a matching and sorting activity. Students will sort the graphs they made in class into the families above for homework.

On Wednesday, students will in groups to create a short presentation about an assigned family. (Your student will receive a rubric in class.) During the presentations, students will take notes in a flip-book study aid. Students have a worksheet on identifying graphs for homework and a challenge opportunity to think of real-world situations that could be graphed as these types of equations. (Students will have done a similar activity as a warm-up.)

We will finish the presentations on Thursday and play a game of “Simon Says” with the graph shapes to review. Students will have homework titled “Identifying Equations.”

On Friday, we will introduce solving systems of linear equations. Students will not have homework over the weekend.

Besides the notes your student brings home, here are some online resources to help with this week’s assignments:

    · Absolute value: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/graphabs.htm

    · Inverse Variation: http://regentsprep.org/Regents/math/algtrig/ATE7/Inverse%20Variation.htm

    · Solving systems of linear equations: http://www.wtamu.edu/academic/anns/mps/math/mathlab/int_algebra/int_alg_tut19_systwo.htm

    Algebra: Bell 2

    Dear parents and guardians,

After a refreshing break, we’re back to school and back to work this week in algebra, with a project on ratio and proportions and data.

On Tuesday, students will read an article on predicting height from bone length and begin activity 1 and 2 from the project. Students will be measuring bones in their arms and legs and looking for a ratio that could help an archaeologist distinguish between whether the bones belonged to a male or female.

On Wednesday, they will continue with activities 3 and 4 in this project and Thursday write a reflection about what they have learned.

On Friday, students will have a chance to show what they know about linear equations in a short pre-test, and then will take notes over slope and practice finding the slope between two points.

Here are some online resources to complement this week’s assignments:

    · Ratios: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/ratio.htm

    · Slope: http://www.purplemath.com/modules/slope.htm

    Thanks for supporting your student!

Wishing your family success in all your new goals,

Kelly DeNu and Nathan Rack (Student Teacher)

    p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }a:link { }

Here is what is going on this week in math:

    Pre-Algebra, Bells 3,4,5,7:

Monday/Wednesday--Students received back their Number Sense Unit Test on Monday (be sure to ask about their improvement from their pre-test grade!!) On these two days, students will be given time to work on re-teach lessons over the areas they have not yet mastered. The re-teach lessons break the topics down and provide more practice. Students will also have the opportunity during this time to ask questions over anything they are still struggling with. -Students who have mastered all areas or only have a couple to work on will be completing a planet mini-project during this time. They will apply their knowledge on scientific notation and ratio/proportions to display information about the different planets.

    Tuesday:

Passport Party! As mentioned last week, this is for students who do not have any late/missing work. Students with missing work spent this time getting caught up. Late work will not be accepted after today.

Thursday: Pro-Web Day! We will be in the computer lab working on pro-ohio web tests. Students will also be getting their Pro-Ohio Form A score (test taken back at the beginning of September)

Friday: All re-teach lessons are due. Students will be taking a re-take test to show mastery and to earn points back on their test grade. Students who complete the re-teach lessons and perform well on their re-take test are guaranteed at least a C average on their test!

    Algebra, Bell 2:

Monday: Students will review order of operations by completing practice problems. There will be homework out of the book!

Tuesday: We will be writing equations from patterns. Students will work with a partner to compete an activity to recognize the pattern used on an arrangement of tiles. Anything not completed during class should be finished for homework.

HW: Remy’s After School Job Problem

Wednesday: We will continue to practice writing equations. Students will complete brief notes then work on a matinee problem.
    HW: Matinee Problem

Thursday/Friday: Students will practice simplifying expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property.
