Week of 1/3
Pre-Algebra: Bells 3,4,5,7
Dear parents and guardians,
After a refreshing break, we’re back to school and back to work this week in pre-algebra, investigating families of graphs. Students are learning to tell the difference between seven types of graphs and equations: linear, inverse variation, absolute value, quadratic, cubic, exponential growth and exponential decay. The state standard we are working towards is Algebra B3: “Students will identify functions as linear or nonlinear based on information given in a graph or equation.”
On Tuesday, we will use graphing calculators in a matching and sorting activity. Students will sort the graphs they made in class into the families above for homework.
On Wednesday, students will in groups to create a short presentation about an assigned family. (Your student will receive a rubric in class.) During the presentations, students will take notes in a flip-book study aid. Students have a worksheet on identifying graphs for homework and a challenge opportunity to think of real-world situations that could be graphed as these types of equations. (Students will have done a similar activity as a warm-up.)
We will finish the presentations on Thursday and play a game of “Simon Says” with the graph shapes to review. Students will have homework titled “Identifying Equations.”
On Friday, we will introduce solving systems of linear equations. Students will not have homework over the weekend.
Besides the notes your student brings home, here are some online resources to help with this week’s assignments:

Dear parents and guardians,
After a refreshing break, we’re back to school and back to work this week in algebra, with a project on ratio and proportions and data.
On Tuesday, students will read an article on predicting height from bone length and begin activity 1 and 2 from the project. Students will be measuring bones in their arms and legs and looking for a ratio that could help an archaeologist distinguish between whether the bones belonged to a male or female.
On Wednesday, they will continue with activities 3 and 4 in this project and Thursday write a reflection about what they have learned.
On Friday, students will have a chance to show what they know about linear equations in a short pre-test, and then will take notes over slope and practice finding the slope between two points.
Here are some online resources to complement this week’s assignments:
