    PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

    • Master in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College
    • Bachelors of Arts/Elementary Education from Northern Kentucky University
    • Associate of Arts from University of Cincinnati

    COURSE GOALS:

    1.Develop skills and motivation in reluctant readers
    2.Extend the abilities of each reader
    3.Encourage students to become engaged with text (through modeling and by providing necessary skills and opportunities), making meaning and personal connections
    4.Provide students with the skills and resources needed to select appropriate, interesting, and challenging reading materials
    5.Reinforce skills needed to effectively read various types of text
    6.Provide students with opportunities to collaborate with peers as readers and writers
    7.Provide students with the skills to become proficient writers through modeling and peer collaboration

    DURING THIS COURSE STUDENTS WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:

    1.Read literature from a variety of genres
    2.Write various pieces for a variety of audiences
    3.Use writing as a creative response to literature
    4.Develop a writing portfolio
    5.Discuss literature with other students and adults
    6.Critique reading materials
    7.Quarterly engage in independent reading projects (5 per quarter)
    8.Participate in literature circles
    9.Respond to reading in written essays
    10.Create and analyze varying forms of poetry
    11.Practice Achievement tests

    GRADING:

    Students will receive a grade on their report card for this course.Students will be graded on in class assignments, project participation, tests, homework, and their final writing portfolio.For every project, each student will be provided with a rubric so that he or she knows exactly what is expected and the date the assignment is due.I am always available for help and therefore expect every student to be able to receive a “C.”

    * Additions may be made to this list as the year progresses, based on students needs and interests
